5th grade Tech - 12 week exploratory class
In the 5th grade technology classes, the emphasis is on basic skills. Keyboarding is emphasized through online practice, typing tests and word processing. Students learn basic skills in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel. They are also introduced to additional applications such as Google Sketch Up, Comic Life, Adobe Flash and Photoshop. Assignments depend on interest and skill level of students in the class. The class adjusted to meet student needs and challenge them in new and interesting applications. Students also are taught the basics of Internet Safety and Digital Reputation. Parents are encouraged to monitor their student's Internet use at home.
6th grade Tech - 12 week exploratory class
In the 6th grade technology classes, the emphasis is on basic skills, however we take those skills and advance them a little farther than fifth grade. Keyboarding is emphasized through online practice, typing tests and word processing where they begin to learn how to format documents and cite sources. Students learn basic skills in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel. They are also introduced to additional applications such as Google Sketch Up, Comic Life, Adobe Flash and Photoshop. Assignments depend on interest and skill level of students in the class. The class adjusted to meet student needs and challenge them in new and interesting applications. Students also are reminded the basics of Internet Safety and Digital Reputation. Parents are encouraged to monitor their student's Internet use at home.
Video Production (7th & 8th grade) - one year elective
Students will be trained in video production, media literacy and may contribute photography to the yearbook. Throughout the year students will use additional applications as needed and may work on other projects for the Monroe Community. There is much responsibility and independence expected in this class, and as such, those who enroll will be closely monitored.
STEAM (7th & 8th grade) - one year elective
The intention of this course is to provide the students an opportunity to explore the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math in a blended environment (online and in-class). Students will be given the opportunity to solve technological problems using a variety of tools, materials, processes and systems while gaining an understanding of the effects and impacts of technology on our everyday lives.
At the same time, through hands-on and other project-based activities, the students will develop technology literacy skills and aptitudes associated with a diverse range of professional careers in technology. Furthermore, the learners will be provided with an opportunity to experience success in schoolwork and improve attitudes and behaviors towards learning, self-awareness, and character development.
This STEAM class is designed to develop student’s critical thinking skills through blended learning, incorporating a variety of interactive tools online, and participating in a learning community. It is a way to connect subjects in meaningful ways that they can apply to their lives beyond middle school, high school and even college!
