Math 2022 - 2023

What can I do to improve in Math?
  • Take good notes in your Math Journal.  Math Journals are there for you to use as a tool, to help you review concepts we learned earlier in the year, and to record your questions.   Don't forget you can update your notes from the Math Journal page on this website.
  • Do your homework!  Homework is meant to be practice on concepts we have learned in class.  Just like athletes practice their sport to get better, homework is your way to practice to improve in math.  You only get out what you put into it.
  • Show your work!  Mistakes happen, so you should show ALL your work so that you can go back and find where you made your error.  Sometimes you may find you are making the same error over and over again.  Learn from your mistakes and the only way to do that is to see your process and how you solved a problem.
  • Ask Questions!  If you don't understand something, ask a question. If you are too shy to ask in class, write it in your math journal and ask the teacher after class.  Sometimes you may just need to understand one part of a concept to finally have it all click!  Questions are always welcome
  • Practice on the math websites.  Below are several resources to give you practice on skills you already know and some you are still learning.  The more practice the better!  If you don't have your user name and password, remember to ask your teacher in class.

PARENTS - What you can do to help your child in math:  (Even if you don't understand the math):
  • Ask questions:
    • Can I see your homework?
    • Would you explain how you did this problem?
    • I see your answer, but I don't see any work, can you show your work?
    • Have you double checked your answer?
    • Did you write down any questions you have for your teacher?
    • Did you label your answers correctly?
    • Where would you use this kind of math in real life?
  • Provide real life math experiences in everyday life:
    • Have students weigh vegetables at the store and read the scale, calculate the price of the vegetable. (weight per pound times the price per pound)
    • Students can create a budget - use an approximate income and have them think of the expenses they would need to live and how much each item would cost.
    • Give students the money to pay for things at the store and have them double check their change.
    • Calculate the tip at a restaurant
    • Double or triple a recipe.
  • Let your child fail:
    • Fail = First Attempt In Learning!  Don't do the work for them, allow students to fail, find their errors and make corrections.
    • Encourage them to try again and develop a growth mindset
    • Acknowledge successes, even small ones.
