T1 - Assignments (Video)

"How to..." video

One of the most popular genres on you tube are “How to…” videos.  People show their skills and share what they know online. Below are some examples of the videos.  Pay attention to the way the video is edited, what kind of film footage they use and how narration is done.  Here are a few examples:

How to tie a tie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAg7z6u4NE8
The demonstrator filmed himself, then added a narration track.

How to do Stained Glass - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO9ppNYIBZA
The demonstrator uses video clips, adds title slides for each step and her narration in on the film clip.

How to fix a flat tire on a bicycle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzqjoFAXA5I
The demonstrator has various video clips, uses title slides for each step and a narration track.

iMovie 11 Tutorial:  The Basics - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWcwCKzuEiA
The demonstrator uses screen captured video and records a narration track along with the screen capture.

Produce a T.V. Segment

A T.V. segment is a part of the news broadcast that contains a story, information aside from the regular news.
For example, the weather segment, the sports segment, entertainment news, etc.   Your assignment is to produce a template for a T.V. segment for KMMS.  This should be a segment that can be played once a week or daily on the news broadcast. For example, if you have a movie review segment, then each week you would review a different movie.  This is an individual assignment - no partners, although you may ask others to participate as long as they have time to complete their own work.

Writing for Broadcast Assignment

In this assignment you will be reading about how writing for a broadcast is different than print media.  The article is from the book "Inside Reporting" by Tim Harrower.  You will take notes on each of the 10 characteristics, then choose a current and newsworthy newspaper article and write two drafts for broadcast.  One draft is that news story for the general public and the second draft is for a middle school audience.  To complete the assignment you need to write a reflection on both drafts using evidence from both article you have read.
